Molassed Chaff
Molassed chaff is made by combining chopped straw and molasses to create a high fibre additive that is used to slow horses from bolting their feed.
Any type of straw can be used in the process but the straw used is normally Oat straw or Wheat straw.
Barley straw, although a greater feed value, tends to ball up and not create a very easily chewed product.
It is important, when choosing a molassed chaff, that the product is light in colour and slightly sticky to the touch, and crumbles easily in the hand. Dark coloured chaff usually denotes either; poor quality straw has been used(mouldy/black) or large amounts of molasses. both should be avoided to avoid problems.
